The twin bore tunnel running under the Devil's Punch Bowl cost £371m which has taken 4 and a half years to complete opens this week within budget and ahead of schedule.
The structure is 1.25 mile long (1.8km) and now forms part of the London to Portsmouth A3 at Hindhead and is the longest under road tunnel in Britain. This will shorten visitors' journey time to the Isle of Wight by 30 minutes!
Many of Wight Locations 7,000 self catering guests take the A3 route to catch the ferry so you will now be able to have a more stress free journey to your accommodation!
The project followed a 30-year campaign for improvements to the Hindhead traffic bottleneck, and the tunnel will be used by 30,000 vehicles a day. The original A3 will be closed to through traffic and acres of protected land returned to heathland with 200,000 new trees and shrubs to be planted.
