Separated by the River Medina and linked by a chain ferry, the Isle of Wight's most northerly towns of Cowes and East Cowes are steeped in maritime heritage.
Famed for its sailing events, yachtsmen from across the world make Cowes their Mecca. But it remains a small town with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The pedestrianised high street is full of interesting boutiques, art galleries and shops with a nautical theme.
East Cowes is the landing point for the car and passenger ferry from Southampton. The town has its own small shopping centre, lively marina and seafront promenade. It is also home to Queen Victoria's magnificent Osborne House and neighbouring Barton Manor, the home of Prince Albert's model farm.
