May Events on the Isle of Wight

May brings longer daylight hours, warming sun and green leaves unfurling, just what we've all been waiting for. It's also the perfect time for a holiday, be it a week of ambling in the countryside or a short break to enjoy the quiet beaches and sunshine. Here are some events to enjoy on the Isle of Wight in May.

Isle of Wight Festival of Transport on Sunday 17th May – taking place at The Railway Station, Havenstreet from 10am – 5pm. Enjoy a day out to remember with an array of railway and road vehicles to see. This is a great free event for all the family, if you wish to board the steam train you’ll need to book ahead and usual day fares apply; Isle of Wight Steam Railway

Riverfest

Riverfest takes place on 30th May at Newport Quay, Newport and is a community event to celebrate the heritage of the River Medina and historic Newport harbour. The event takes place from 11am until 3pm and entry is free, donations are welcome; Riverfest

Sea Songs and Shanties On the Green, Yarmouth from Friday 29th until Sunday 31st May. If you are lucky enough to be on the island this weekend then pop the date in your diary. During the day Sea Shanty singers and many other entertainers will perform. Join in the celebrations and bring the whole family to this splendid event; Sea Songs and Shanties on the Green

Walking the Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight Walking Festival from 2nd to 17th May. Walks take place all over the island and this is a great opportunity to discover unique routes with experienced local walkers. Walking is one of the best ways to enjoy the local area, from sandy beaches to wooded valleys, hill tops to sailing towns, you can see them all. Guided Bat Walk on Friday 29th May from 8.30pm – 10.30pm. Join this guided “bat walk” around Los Altos Park, Sandown and learn from resident “batman” Graham Street all about the habitats, and behaviour of these fascinating creatures.
